On Visiting Your Doctor about Your Recalled DePuy Hip Implant: What to Expect

Posted by William Davis on November 29, 2010 at 1:12 PM

Right after DePuy Orthopaedics issued a product recall on two of their hip implants, the ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System, the recipients of these implants were urged to visit their doctor immediately. Before anything else, the health of the recipients should be medically evaluated first. Upon visiting your doctor, you should expect the following to be indicated for you:

Blood Work: Your doctor will order standard blood testing to rule out any hematologic disorders brought about by the hip implant. Metallosis, however, is expected because the chromium and cobalt substances from the implants are released into the bloodstream resulting from the friction. This can also tell if you have suffered from any kind of infection.

Imaging Tests: Most likely, this is the second kind of test that the doctor will ask you to undergo. It may be a simple X-ray procedure of your pelvis to visualize the area around the hip implant. This is usually the case if the metal ions in your blood are not that high; otherwise, your doctor will advise you for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test to rule out any tissue damage.

Revision Surgery: If both blood examinations and imaging tests show fluid accumulation and tissue damage, your doctor will strongly advise you to undergo a revision surgery, or a second hip replacement operation to ‘revise’ the implant: how it is positioned, how it is implanted, or how it should be replaced by a new and functional prosthesis.

When you have assured that your health is being monitored, then it is time for the next crucial step: to press charges at the height of the DePuy hip replacement recall. Filing a hip recall lawsuit against DePuy should be made so that you can claim fair monetary compensation for everything that you have went through because of the defective hip implant. Next to your health, how your rights were violated should be acted upon by a good hip recall lawyer--efficiently and immediately.
